Drop into Battle Royale, play without building in Zero Build, or find a creator's island with a different set of rules. Choosing a mode is the first useful decision.

How it plays, who it suits and where to start.
Fortnite's name now covers more than one kind of evening. Battle Royale gives you a shrinking safe area, scavenged equipment, and a fight to be the last player or team standing. Building adds another set of decisions: spend materials to make cover, gain height, or change the shape of a fight. Zero Build removes that construction system, which makes existing cover and your route through the landscape particularly important.
There are also games made by Epic and islands made by other creators. Their rules can be completely different from Battle Royale. An obstacle course, a race, and a team combat map do not require the same skills or offer the same progression. Read the island description before joining, especially when friends say they are playing Fortnite but mean different things by it.
A Battle Royale match moves through a few recognizable problems. Find equipment without exposing yourself, work out where the safe area is going, and choose a position that gives you options. The difficult choice is often whether to fight at all. Hearing shots nearby does not mean joining them will help you reach the next circle.
For your first sessions, try a landing area you can learn rather than changing your route every round. Get comfortable with its exits and nearby cover. Keep your inventory understandable: weapons for different distances, healing, and a way to reposition when the available loot supports it. Exact weapons change, so build a plan around what an item does instead of memorizing one season's favorite loadout.
With a squad, agree on a landing spot and stay close enough to help each other. A quick map ping can prevent four people from wandering into four separate fights. When things go wrong, look for the first decision that split the team; the final elimination rarely tells the whole story.
Fortnite suits friends who want to try several kinds of game inside one client. Start with Zero Build if you want to learn movement, shooting, and positioning without also learning construction. Choose building if shaping the battlefield is what interests you.
For a quieter introduction, Epic's Creative documentation explains how to select a private game on supported islands. That gives a group room to learn the rules together. Match the island to the time and attention everyone actually has, and the large menu becomes much easier to navigate.
